Gastropubs in London
17 gastropubs in London, each one on the Guide on merit.

Canton Arms
Gastropub · European · Stockwell
A proper Victorian boozer at the front, with the cooking in the back room. It climbed from 46th to 11th in the national gastropub list in two years and Stockwell has kept it off most people's lists.
Tables are held back for walk-ins and bookings only open four weeks out. Sunday is lunch only, no dinner.

St John's Tavern
Gastropub · European · Archway
The reason to get off at Archway. A cheerful front saloon for a pint and a big dining hall behind it for modern British plates with a Mediterranean lean.
Book the back dining hall, not the bar, for dinner. Works as both a casual drink and a special-occasion dinner, which is rare.

The Baring
Gastropub · European · Islington
Pub bones, restaurant cooking, a room that feels special without trying too hard.
It is closer to Essex Road and Haggerston than to Angel, so plan the walk from central Islington.

The Bull & Last
Gastropub · European · Highgate
A few steps from Hampstead Heath and the food long ago outgrew the gastropub label. Game, sharing cuts, a proper wine list, a Scotch egg people travel for.
Come hungry off a Heath walk. Downstairs is the pub, upstairs the dining room. Sunday roast books up well ahead.

The Camberwell Arms
Gastropub · European · Camberwell
A pub shell with serious seasonal cooking and a relaxed room. The Camberwell move when you have done Peckham to death.
The Sunday long lunch and the whole-table sharing menus are the things to book ahead for.

The Fat Badger
Gastropub · European · Notting Hill
The Pelican team's clubby Notting Hill pub, above Canteen. The kitchen is no afterthought.
The upstairs restaurant is prepaid; book the first floor if you want to keep it loose.

The Golden Tooth
Gastropub · European · Newington Green
The Papi team take a Newington Green alehouse and make it sing, with punchy plates and good wine in a room that still works as a pub.
Lean on Charlie Carr's English wines; they are the whole point.

The Harwood Arms
Gastropub · European · Fulham
Michelin-starred pub food without the Mayfair formality. Worth the trip to Fulham, which is not a sentence you write often.
Walk-ins are not accepted and card details secure every booking, so reserve well ahead and arrive on time.

The Hero
Gastropub · Maida Vale
The Pelican's smaller Maida Vale sibling, the same kitchen behind it but more of a neighbourhood feel.
Come for a long lunch or unhurried dinner. Smaller than the Pelican so it books out faster. Reserve.

The Kerfield Arms
Gastropub · European · Camberwell
The Baring team corner gastropub. Go for the roast. It took a Michelin star within the year.
Go for the Sunday roast and book the dining room.

The Latimer
Gastropub · Notting Hill
A gastropub from the Spiteri family, with Jon Spiteri (St John, Sessions Arts Club) and Melanie Arnold (Rochelle Canteen) joining forces with their children Fin, Lorcan and Molly. The pub-first space has stools and steel-topped tables up front, white tablecloths further back, and big windows that flood the high-ceilinged room with light. Masala monkfish with tartare sauce features on the bar menu.

The Parakeet
Gastropub · European · Kentish Town
A handsome pub with restaurant-level cooking from ex-Brat chefs. Fire-cooked and protein-forward, with atmosphere for dinner or a clever low-effort date.
The dining room books up ahead, but the front bar keeps tables back, so try walking in there.

The Pelican
Gastropub · European · Notting Hill
The corner pub that reset the template for the London gastropub, and now the flagship of the fast-growing Public House Group. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, packed to the rafters, and a door policy some find brisk. Still very good, just no longer a quiet local secret.
Come for lunch or early in the week to dodge the crush. Walk-ins get the bar, book the dining room well ahead.

The Plimsoll
Gastropub · European · Finsbury Park
A Four Legs-team pub near Finsbury Park. The Dexter cheeseburger has a cult following. House bakery bread and natural wine.
Go for the burger and a glass of something low-intervention. Burgers can sell out; go early or wait with a drink. Doesn't take many bookings.

The Red Lion & Sun
Gastropub · European · Highgate
A Georgian coaching inn in Highgate Village with log fires, two gardens and a menu rewritten daily. Third best gastropub in Britain in 2026, and it still feels like a country pub on the Northern line.
The booking rules are strict: eight people maximum and they cancel if you are fifteen minutes late. Sunday roast books out first.

The Stablehand
Gastropub · European · Lancaster Gate
A handsome British gastropub off Lancaster Gate that sources everything from the British Isles. Wood panelling, velvet and equestrian art, and a Sunday roast worth the walk back through Kensington Gardens.
The three-course set lunch is the value play. Sit in the back room, the front bar runs livelier.

The Waterman's Arms
Gastropub · European · Barnes
A restored riverside pub in Barnes cooking everything over coals, with a wood-panelled dining room and balcony doors onto the Thames. The Infatuation rates the sharing roast the best in London and almost nobody makes the trip.
The balcony cannot reliably be booked, so walk up for it. Sunday lunch wants two or three weeks' notice.
